I get many phone calls and emails from people all over the country.  From young people to middle age adults.  Everyone has a story to tell, but how to find an audience and to whom to contact is the biggest question people have.  How to start?  Where to start?  This is what I help my clients figure out.  I take the guess work out and the years of trial and error and teach you what I’ve learned with 23 years of speaking experience.  Visit www.SpeakFullTime.com and let’s work together.

If you have a desire and a passion, you too can make a career as a motivational speaker like I have for 23 years.  It’s hard!  Walking was hard when you were 7 months old too, but you never quit. I will coach you from the very thought of wanting to be a speaker to where your website is set up and you are now booking speaking engagements at $2,000 – $10,000 per day.  It’s hard work.  It takes self promotion.  Discipline.  Patience.  Desire.  Commitment to work your craft everyday.

If I have done it and have been extremely successful than you too can do it!

“You mean, you can actually get paid to tell stories?”, some people ask.  Well, it’s not that easy.  It not THAT you tell a story, but HOW you tell your story and what you give to your audience.  I teach all that.  Visit www.SpeakFullTime.com and learn more.

I’ve been getting paid for 23 years doing what I love to an audience I am passionate about.  I speak to teens in middle school assemblies, high school assemblies, student leadership conferences, parents and community programs.  Visit my website at www.JeffYalden.com. In 1992, I had my first speaking engagement in Apopka, FL.  People laughed at me and told me I’d never be a speaker.  I heard everything from the naysayers.  “Who would want to pay you to speak?”  “Who would hire you?”  “Schools don’t pay!”  I never listened, but deep in my heart I knew what I wanted to do and I was determined.

My House. My Car.

My House. My Car. You Can Have This Too!

How would you like to live in the house of your dreams, in the city you want to live in, and drive the car you want to drive, while creating your own schedule and taking days off you want off?

Read on . . .

My name is Jeff Yalden and in 23 years I have spoken in all 50 states and delivered over 4,000 PAID programs.  US Airways, which is now American Airlines has me logged in for 3.7 million miles.  I bet 97% of those miles are for speaking engagements.  I live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in a beautiful home, and I drive a nice Corvette as my sports car.  I did all this as Youth Motivational Speaker.

Want to make $2,000 – $10,000 a day as a Youth Speaker to teens?  Want to speak in schools at school assemblies? Talk to parents and communities?  Do you have a product or a book?

Here is some general advice:

1.  Speak for FREE to the audience of your choosing.  Get your name out there and earn the respect of other speakers.  Pay the price and do what other speakers have done to achieve the successes they’ve achieved.  Nothing good happens without hard work and great effort put forth.  Get out there and “Just Do It!”

So, the reason I say speak for free is because often times speaking for free could lead to more speaking engagements because you never know who is in the audience.  Furthermore, speaking for free gives you exposure where you can get testimonials, references, and the possibilities of pictures of you in action.  Maybe you can even record the talk on video – Youtube and Vimeo!  You are welcome!

I don’t recommend traveling the country speaking for free, but I do recommend speaking free with a purpose:

* Decision Makers – One of the best marketing tips I can give you is to get in front of those that hire you.  For example, many years ago, I offered to speak at the Southern Association of Student Councils Conference FREE.  I did this because I knew that at this event there were state advisors and student council sponsors from all over the south that could potentially hire me as a speaker.  It worked and I have done it three times.

So, if you speak for free and get referrals and spin-off speaking engagements as a result of speaking free . . . The end result is getting paid and making money.  Marketing!

2.  Offer a Product or Service to Potential Clients.  Have you written a book or “How To Guide?”  Some organizations don’t have money for a speaker, but they do for materials and supplies.  Say you’ve written a book called, “How to Earn a College Scholarship.”  You probably wouldn’t be wise to speak to a Multi-Level Marketing Group about Selling, but you’d probably do great speaking at a youth conference for Student Athletes or a Athletic Directors Conference where your book is a much better fit.  Sales and Publicity.  Getting your name out there.

In some cases, they might not be able to bring you in to speak on your fee, but they’d have enough money to buy a book or workbook for each attendee.  You might even make more money on your books than if you were paid to speak.  You are welcome!

Make sure your audience is the right fit for the product or service you are promoting.  I have a book for teens, teachers, and parents.  That’s my audience.  I don’t promote it to sales people or business professionals.  They wouldn’t care about my book.

Make sure you can sell at the event too.  I’ve had some speaking events where I wasn’t allowed to sell.  If you are not allowed to sell and they won’t buy your product there is no point on you speaking there.  Walk away.  Again, speak for free with a purpose and put your energy towards being productive and getting paid.

3.  Repetitive Speaking Makes for Great Timing too.  You have a message you want to share but not sure about the value you provide, right?  There is value in the content, but if the delivery is poor the content won’t be heard.  That means you have no value.  Therefore, when you speak for free you are getting practice. Practice will give your message value.

I think you should speak 25-50 times before asking for money.  Ge the message down.  Use the opportunity to develop your style, storytelling, timing, and gestures.  Know when the audience will laugh.  Speaking for free gives you this opportunity.  Speaking for free gives you the opportunity to speak and speaking makes you better.

4.  Get Pictures, Video Footage, Testimonials and Experience in front of your audiences.  One of the things I teach in Speak Full Time is the importance of good pictures, video content, and testimonials.  Your website should have good pictures, a good demo video, and testimonials.  This will set you apart from many speakers and make the client interested in hiring you.  Don’t overlook the importance of good pictures, videos, and testimonials.

Pictures show you have experience and you can usually see how the audience is responding.  Video footage is important because people want to see you on stage.  Testimonials work because it shows people are willing to talk about you and put their name as a reference having hired or seen you speak.

It’s easier to get free speaking engagements without a video than it is to get paid speaking engagements without a video.  Your fee should represent the marketing material you send out too.  You have a good video?  More money.  You have good pictures?  More money.  You have good testimonials?  More money!  More Money . . . More Money . . . More Money!  This means you’re on your way to becoming a successful motivational speaker.

So, if you are going to be a motivational speaker for youth or a motivational speaker for another niche market, you’ll have to get your name out there and speaking for free is the best way to get your name out there.  Just remember, when speaking for FREE only do it with a purpose.  You might not get paid upfront, but you are going to get paid as a result.

You can’t speak for free forever.  You will know when you are ready to charge and what do you charge?  Well, I would look at the value you bring to your audience and compare that to the market you’re speaking in and set your fees.  Be careful because everyone thinks they are the best speaker and have the best story.  The story and the message is one thing.  Your delivery is another thing.  If you can’t reach your audience with HOW you deliver and tell your story, the message or content doesn’t matter because they’ll be sleeping or on their phones.

Free advice to you Motivational Speaker wanting to make a career speaking professionally.  If I can help you further, I’d love to hear your story and see how we can work together.  Visit www.SpeakFullTime.com.  I promise that if you are serious working with me will be one of the best investments you’ll make in your new career.

I met Dennis in August of 1987 in the locker room at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire. We were both incoming juniors.

Dennis was getting ready for soccer practice and I, having just moved to New Hampshire from New York, was visiting School for the first time.

Dennis was the first BG student I met besides my neighbor, Paul Eisen.

Dennis and I formed a friendship. He played soccer and wrestled. I, was really struggling but I didn’t let it show, like many of our youth today. End of September, I ended up hospitalized for severe depression and thoughts of Suicide.

Senior year, Dennis and I both played football at BG and here is where our friendship really grew. He and I spent a lot of time together talking about (next year – College.). We would talk Military, airplanes, ROTC, Emery- Riddle Aeronautical University, and Jacksonville University in Florida.

JU where we both applied, Only he went. I did t think I was smart enough nor ready. I made other plans, which really changed the course of my life and dreams.

Since then, I have always admired Dennis. He followed his dreams and never looked back. Always looking forward and making good decisions along the way.

He’s why I learned to have a love of golf. He’s been of my longest friends and even though we could go a Month or two without talking it’s like we never missed a beat when we do talk.

I was even the bridesmaid for Cami, his wife, in Hawaii, while our friend Chris Long was the best man. We had a blast. An absolute blast.

This weekend, Dennis is retiring about 23 honorable years as a Naval Officer. Incredible. Honorable service. I’m so honored and proud and feel privileged to take part in his retirement ceremonies alongside family and many friends.

This picture is last week when the Commander said, “Hey Turtle (his nickname)! We have an empty seat available. How’d you like to fly with the Blue Angels?” Holy Cow. Can you imagine such an experience? Let alone, what an honor!

Dennis is in the middle.

I’m proud of you Dennis. You are a great friend, an honorable husband and father. You served our military and given us freedom in which I know for me I’ve never taken for granted. I’ve always known we were safe knowing it was people like you leading our men and women every day.

This is a very proud moment and important chapter in your life where we turn the page and you go from Naval Officer to civilian life. It’s not going to be easy. It’s a different world, but I know you and you’ll adjust and carry-on like you’ve always done.

Thank you for always being a friend. Thank you for for reaching me a love of golf. I’m proud and honored to take this all in and enjoy this ceremony with you, your incredible family, and the many friends that call you a best friend.

Congratulations Dennis! We’ve come along way since those days sitting on the curb at Bishop Guertin High School contemplating where our future would lead us.

I think we’ve both done good and contributed to making our world a better place.

(SALUTE)

By the way, my family (all military), says, “Thank you and congratulations!”

Speaking Teen Mental Health at Fairfield City Schools …

I just arrived Fairfield High School for tonight parent and community presentation.

A teacher had been waiting for me. How long I didn’t know,

I walk in the doors. I’m tired. I tried not to show my exhaustion. I just finished – 5,000 teens, 250 teachers, 12 assembly presentations in three days. Oh, I also did a finale – Parents and Community presentation. Yeah, I’m tired and I’ve lost my voice, but I need to get to Iowa tomorrow for a big Suicide Prevention/Crisis Intervention Talk. No time to be tired or lose my voice when I’m saving lives and working with teens and schools.

“Hi, Mr. Yalden!”, she said. I reply with, “Hi!” As she extends her hand and she tells me how much she enjoyed yesterday’s Teacher in-Service on Teen Suicide and Mental Health. I said, “Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.”

She then goes on to tell me about her 6th grade daughter and as a result of hearing my talk yesterday, this happened:

A day prior her and a friend heard one of their friends talking about suicide. The girls were smart enough to ask if he knew how he’d want to take his life.

The boy said he had three different ways in which he could. He also mentioned his dad was a hunter and they had guns in the house. (Red Flags)

After hearing me speak yesterday, the girls immediately went to their counselor and shared what they knew because they heard me say, “It’s OK to speak up if you know or suspect a friend is showing signs or symptoms of suicide or self harm (RED FLAGS).

The appropriate action was taken. Counselors from two different schools immediately got involved as well as parents. Boy is where he needs to be.

These girls may have saved a life because they spoke up. Proud of these young ladies for the courage they showed and for them taking action right away.

6th grade my friends. Here in Fairfield, OH. Actually, this is every where in our country. This just happened to be where I was speaking this week.

Fairfield School District is one of the largest school districts in the state of Ohio. It’s a beautiful community with outstanding schools. It was a pleasure to spend three days in Fairfield. Students were fantastic. Respectful. Kind. Appreciative. The teachers and staff were very inviting. The boys and girls soccer teams were playing and I got to witness them winning a playoff game. Beautiful Ohio community, yet, they’ve experienced three suicides in three years. Hard to imagine that such a beautiful community with great schools would suffer so much, but statistically, they’re experiencing what our statistics are saying.

I was proud to be present for three days while this district wants to be proactive and meet their kids at every angle. We did a great job.

These girls did a great job. What we really need to focus on is teaching our kids that it’s OK to ask for help. Mental Health, math class, or on the athletic field, asking for help gives you answers. However, our youth today are always afraid of being stupid for asking questions or raising our hands and fear what others might say. Furthermore, I hear from a lot of youth as well, that they don’t know how to ask for help. As simple as it is to ask for help, our youth are struggling with reaching out to a trusted adult. This combined with our youth lacking coping skills and problem solving skills is what created my Theory on Teen Suicide.

Mental Illness will be the largest health care crisis of our time. We need to address these issues and meet teens where they’re hurting. In their heart. Teach them about coping skills and problem solving skills. Teach them that opening their heart to trusted adults is nothing to be ashamed about.

Education is where we need to bring Mental Health classes into every school and make it a part of our curriculum. This is a necessity to the Suicide Epidemic we are experiencing today with our youth.

Fairfield Video

It’s 5am I am walking into Dayton airport and I see a gentleman in his Air Force fatigues with his wife and three children. Each of them sobbing the little one shaking and crying loudly.

I go to the American agent to check in and drop off my bag. Walking back to the TSA Security check point I see this beautiful family again – still crying, hugging, and wishing this wasn’t the case. Dad is deploying leaving the family behind while he serves this beautiful of his and ours. Mom serves this country too because now she has to become mommy and daddy filling in that void while daddy is far far away serving this nation.

I walk through security and I couldn’t help but to keep watching and thinking, “Sir, you can’t be late!” My Heart was sinking. I felt for this family.

At the gate, I see him approach. This time all alone. The family walking back to their cars. Time to get home get the kids ready for school. Going to be a tough day.

Gate agent starts boarding the flight. I say, “Sir, where you sitting?” He checks his ticket and says “10C.” I say, “That’s a good seat. I’m in 4A (First Class) Group One – here switch. You deserve this more than I do today. Enjoy!” I say, “PLEASE and THANK YOU! For serving our country.”

It’s now 5:50am. We are boarded and ready for flight.

(This is my belief and I don’t mean it to be politicaI. I don’t want to take away from how beautiful these moments where to my (our) heart.

I can’t help but think that is why I stand for our flag. That is why I stand for the National Anthem. The flag and our Anthem represents freedom. It represents our beautiful country and the men and women that serve every day – then and now near and far.

In one week, I’m going to celebrate the retirement of one of my best friends. He’s served 23 years in the Navy. 23 honorable years as a Naval Officer. In those 23 years he’s been deployed having to leave the family behind. He’s had to sacrifice and so has his wife. He’s lived on standby because at a moments notice it could mean, “I gotta go…. LOVE you all!”

I’ll always look at the Red, White, and Blue such powerful colors standing so bright amongst the green trees and beautiful blue skies that are the backdrop of any flag waving so proudly.

To me, this flag represents freedom that we all in this country take for granted. It represents opportunity. It represents we are one.

Thank you Military, first-responders, firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, community service personal, city & state workers – maintenance, board members, office personnel. Thank you to our government workers and all utility workers making sure we have power, water, garbage collection, sewer services, and so many more thanks.

Thank you to us – Americans. Whether you are black or white, Jewish or Christian, Catholic, etc. thank you to each and every one of us that sees America for what it is. FREEDOM provided by so many – ALL OF US together.

It’s all of us that make America great.

(Janet Kelly – this does not mean I will give up my seat next week.)

Jeff Yalden

This is a touchy subject and one that I will probably be criticized over.  Speakers fees range from donations to six or maybe even seven figures per keynote address.  I work in education as youth motivational speaker, therefore, I will talk about only what I know.

In 19 years, I have addressed every teen audience a speaker can speak to.  I have addressed High School Assemblies, Middle School Assemblies, Teen Conferences, Leadership Conferences, Teacher In-Services, Staff Trainings, Prisons, At-Risk Teens, and every audience that I have failed to mention too.

Every one of these audiences have paid me to speak to their teens.  I have fought myself with how much to charge and how much value I bring and what is or what isn’t affordable.  This is my career and how I get paid.

When I coach other teen speakers on how much to charge I always say this…
